About the Role

Under general direction, coordinate Matson Navigation Company Inc.'s (Matson's) and its subsidiaries' activities relating to compliance with environmental programs, both vessel and shoreside. For all aspects of Matson's operations, support environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data collection and reporting. Track industry trends for sustainability metrics. Support and contribute to sustainability projects. Support terminal and warehouse equipment and cold ironing grant funding opportunities.

Ensure the accomplishment of established goals and objectives with prescribed priorities, time limitations, and with fiscal responsibilities. Exercise independent judgment in the course of carrying out overall responsibilities and other activities as assigned. Assist in management and administration of safety, quality, environment, and security (SQES) programs for Matson, its subsidiaries, and major outside contractors. Make recommendations in the formulation of goals and objectives. Design and monitor safety, security, and environment policies, procedures, and programs.

What you'll do:

  • Manage compliance with international, federal, state, and local SQES regulations for vessels, terminals, warehouses, and office. For vessels, manage USEPA Vessel General Permit compliance, California State Lands Commission ballast water and biofouling requirements, and shore power reporting.
  • Leverage effective relationships with vessel and terminal staff to collect data regularly from all vessels and terminals to enable real-time compliance tracking. Use software to digitize recordkeeping to the extent possible. Use historical compliance data to track trends in compliance and administer corrective actions as necessary. Collect information for annual shoreside air emissions inventories.
  • Assist with EEXI / CII and other IMO environmental compliance metrics.
  • Ensure reports are submitted timely for IMO DCS, Clean Cargo, and Environmental Ship Index (ESI).
  • Manage reporting for vessel environmental incentive programs.
  • In conjunction with the Director, Environment & Quality, draft and maintain approved SQES procedures, guidelines, and policies for company operations. Design such procedures to keep the company in compliance with applicable rules and regulations and ensure an ongoing awareness and sensitivity in all employees.
  • Collaborate with others to identify areas for improvement and cost recovery opportunities and develops standards of best practices for processes.
  • Participate in regulatory agency and local working groups to influence positively the upcoming regulatory requirements and to monitor regulations for changes in applicable compliance. Inform the appropriate departments within Matson.
  • Act as central point of contact for environmental data questions from employees, regulatory bodies and others for all Matson entities.
  • Serve as the department liaison on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting and customer requests.
  • Use knowledge of regulatory trends to support decision making for equipment purchases.
  • Support the editing and publishing of the bi-monthly SQES Bulletin.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Travel required for attending audits, conducting training, and making physical inspections of the offices of Matson and subsidiaries and at terminal facilities.

You have these skills:

  • Excellent written and communication skills with the ability to lead meetings and present information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Adept with Microsoft Office Suite. Advanced Excel and Word skills required. Power BI experience a plus.
  • Experience in document control processes and management of such systems.
  • Ability to achieve results by taking initiative and making appropriate decisions.
  • Ability to share knowledge, ideas, and information within the organization with the ability to influence others.
  • Ability to be organized, set priorities, design processes, meet deadlines, and set realistic goals.
  • Ability to develop relationships and treat people as valued team members.
  • Ability to travel as needed.

And these qualifications:

  • 4-year college degree, with an environmental or engineering degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in the environmental industry.
  • Familiarity with environmental reporting requirements, both voluntary and regulatory, required. Provide experience and expertise in at least two existing compliance programs, such as VGP, ballast water, NPDES (including regional stormwater requirements), RCRA, air permitting, water quality, etc.
  • Understanding of ISM, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 management systems and obligations a plus.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain TWIC card.

  • Familiarity with marine, terminal, and trucking operations in Hawaii, Guam, Alaska, and USWC.

The annual salary range for this position in California is $111,300 - $151,500. The salary offered will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.
