Overview

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

The Paralegal will assist attorney(s) by providing clerical and research support services including document preparation and review; interviewing clients and witnesses; research, investigations, and fact checking; and trial/hearing preparation.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Primary job duties to include regulatory docket management for dockets before the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission.
    • Regulatory docket management includes tracking of filings and deadlines, SME assignments and coordination for discovery, exhibit review and preparation, confidentiality markings/ log, and updating regular management reports regarding docket status.
  • Meets with attorneys, clients, and other professionals to discuss assigned cases or projects.
  • Drafts legal documents including routine pleadings and motions, affidavits, and interrogatories; files motions and pleadings according to judicial procedures.
  • Provide paralegal support including but not limited to:
    • Initial drafting.
    • Document review and production.
    • Legal research for litigation, real property, contracts, bankruptcy, compliance, and other legal matters.
  • Researches and analyzes statutes, regulations, legal articles, judicial decisions, and other legal sources; provides written analysis to attorneys.
  • Interviews clients and witnesses and prepares summaries of their statements.
  • Prepares, organizes, stores, and retrieves case files, which may include evidence, exhibits, depositions, pleadings, and other items.
  • Assists attorneys with trial preparation, which may include attending trials and hearings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

OTHER FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Complies with all safety rules and cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety and safe work habits, to include the reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
  2. Complies with all applicable Hawaii Gas policies and procedures.
  3. Maintains assigned work area and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe manner; performs housekeeping duties as required and/or instructed. Works in a safe and responsible manner.
  4. Performs all other related duties as instructed by supervisor/manager.
Qualifications

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate degree in Paralegal Studies or related field.

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Paralegal Studies or related field.
  • Paralegal experience preferred.

Preferred Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

  • Paralegal certificate preferred.

Working Conditions/Environment:

  • Working conditions are normal for an office environment.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
  • Able to perform all physical duties entailed by the "Working Conditions/Physical Requirements"
