Position: OUTPATIENT SUBSTANCE USE COUNSELOR I Reports to: Substance Use Treatment Clinical Supervisor

Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt

Schedule: Day Shift, M-F

JOB SUMMARY:

The Substance Abuse Counselor provides individual, group and family counseling, education and case management for assigned clients.

QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum bachelor's degree in a mental health discipline, master's preferred; and/or at least one year of direct work experience in residential and/or outpatient substance use disorder treatment. Must be willing to work towards Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) credential. Personal vehicle and valid Hawaii State driver license required.

COMMUNICATION DEMANDS:

The position requires talking to co-workers, clients, vendors; requires written communication to and from co-workers, clients, vendor, talking on the telephones; requires responding to written or verbal requests of co-workers, clients, and vendors; requires training/giving verbal and written instructions; requires receiving verbal and written instructions; requires writing/composing written language; requires reading; requires visiting/working at other work-sites; Ability to communicate via the latest technologies required for the position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Regular attendance is required for the position.
  • Develop clinically appropriate treatment plans with assigned clients and revise as scheduled.
  • Provide individual substance use counseling, group therapy, family counseling, and case management services as assigned.
  • Provide classes and psycho-educational groups related to addiction, relapse prevention, relationship issues, women's issues and other appropriate topics.
  • Participate in OPS treatment team meetings and seeks consultation from other disciplines as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical records for each assigned client, noting significant problems and progress (using the Web Infrastructure for Treatment Services System-WITS)
  • Prepare written reports and correspondence related to case management in a professional and timely manner.
  • Ensure proper and timely documentation to meet funding and billing requirements.
  • Participate in quality assurance practices including record audits and quality reviews.
  • Ensure a smooth transition of clients within the FTS continuum of care by providing ongoing verbal and written communication with other program staff or referral agencies related to client needs or concerns.
  • Maintain work area in a neat, orderly and sanitary manner.
  • Correctly and promptly follow specified agency procedures required for the appropriate handling of all Emergency Response Codes.
  • Maintain all credentials and certifications, as specified by agency policy and procedures.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Able to meet basic standards of physical, mental health, and communication demands. Specified by State and/or professional accreditation standards applicable to this agency. Initial/Annual criminal background check, pre-employment, annual physical examination, CPR/first aid, TB test, and driver abstract compliance with agency policy are required
